Second Cycle
«Second Cycle» by teo jakob stands for circular furnishing concepts using high-quality design furniture from existing projects. Rather than discarding furniture that is still fully functional, teo jakob inspects, refurbishes and adapts it precisely to new spatial requirements. The result is a sustainable alternative to new furniture, based on provenance, quality and planning certainty.
This approach is particularly effective with USM Haller. The modular system can be fully dismantled, supplemented with original components and reconfigured for new uses – from office storage to flexible solutions for homes, public administrations and institutions. «Second Cycle» makes the circular economy tangible in office furnishing: as precisely planned reuse, not anonymous second-hand furniture.

PROVENANCE RATHER THAN ANONYMOUS SECOND-HAND
The furniture in teo jakob’s «Second Cycle» offering comes from existing teo jakob projects. Its provenance and condition are known and documented. Each piece is cleaned and, where necessary, supplemented with original components. This approach provides reliable access to pre-owned USM furniture, refurbished design classics and reconditioned office furniture in Switzerland.
PLANNING RATHER THAN INDIVIDUAL SALES
«Second Cycle» does not operate like a conventional second-hand furniture market. High-quality furnishing systems from earlier projects are taken back by teo jakob, reconditioned by specialists and reconfigured to meet new requirements. A former shelving system, for example, can become part of a workplace, an informal exchange area or a reception space. The focus is not on selling individual pieces, but on planning made-to-made furnishing solutions with durable, high-quality systems.

«With Second Cycle, we place design culture within a responsible framework. Existing USM furniture is carefully inspected, refurbished and integrated into new furnishing concepts. In this way, we create a cycle that brings together quality, aesthetics and sustainability.»
– Michèle Rossier, Regional Director for French-speaking Switzerland and member of teo jakob’s Executive Board, initiated «Second Cycle».
THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY AS PART OF INTERIOR DESIGN
Certified furniture from teo jakob’s «Second Cycle» offering is deliberately integrated into new solutions. Budgets can therefore be invested where new requirements arise – for example in lighting design, acoustics or room-in-room systems for contemporary working environments. Planning, visualisation, delivery and installation form part of a continuous process. Reuse thus becomes an integral element of precise interior design planning.
BIOPÔLE: «SECOND CYCLE» IN PRACTICE
Flexible spaces
On the Biopôle campus in Epalinges, more than 160 companies and institutions from research and industry share common infrastructure. The spaces need to support flexible forms of work. «Second Cycle» supports this dynamic with furniture that is reused and adapted.
Adaptable system
For a multipurpose meeting area, a former USM Haller system was reconfigured from storage or archive furniture into seating with integrated storage. This example shows how modular furniture remains functional and precise over several cycles of use.
Extending systems
USM «Second Cycle» furniture can be supplemented with new components such as «USM Soft Panels». These integrate magnetically into existing systems and combine acoustic qualities with additional colours and materials. Existing furniture is thus reused and further developed.
Existing and new elements
At Biopôle, reconditioned furniture and new elements are combined. «USM Kitos» tables from «Second Cycle» structure conference rooms; communal areas remain flexible. This brings together design quality, flexibility and the circular economy.
ACQUIRING FURNITURE ECONOMICALLY AND WITH CAREFUL USE OF RESOURCES
For companies, public administrations, institutions and private clients, «Second Cycle» reduces the need to invest in new furniture where existing pieces can still be used meaningfully. New budgets can be directed towards areas shaped by current technical requirements. In this way, teo jakob anticipates an important development in public procurement, where refurbishment and the circular economy are becoming increasingly relevant in tendering procedures and planning processes.
