USM

USM Haller is the modular furniture system from the Swiss manufacturer USM, based in Münsingen. The core is the chrome-plated sphere that connects the steel tubes in a fixed grid; powder-coated metal panels are inserted in between. From this modular kit, sideboards, shelving units, room dividers, or entire storage walls are created, which can be extended, adapted, or deconstructed as needed. The system, unchanged since 1965, is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is complemented by height-adjustable USM Kitos tables and textile Soft Panels, which are magnetically integrated into the structure, adding colour and sound absorption.

teo jakob opened the first USM showroom in Bern in 1972 and today operates the USM PlayLab there as the only official USM showroom in Switzerland. New constructions, expansions and removals are planned on a project-specific basis; with «Second Cycle», teo jakob puts tested USM elements back into circulation. A broad range of USM products is also available at teo jakob Geneva and Zurich.

USM PlayLab

At Gerechtigkeitsgasse 36 in Bern the USM PlayLab demonstrates how USM furniture can be planned in a modular way for residential, office, and reception spaces. Colours, configurations, and functions can be tried out. The world’s first specialised USM showroom was established in Bern in 1972. Today’s PlayLab continues this tradition. With ever-changing displays and expert advice, Gerechtigkeitsgasse 36 is the premier location to buy, configure or refurbish USM furniture in Bern.

USM Soft Panel

Timelessness, modularity and functionality have defined USM for over 60 years. With the USM Haller modular furniture system, the Swiss design icon stands for a timeless, adaptable structure that continuously adjusts to new requirements and generations. The new USM Haller Soft Panel expands the product range with a soft, textile layer. The panels are clicked into the tubular frame using four magnets. No tools, no additional hardware – simply fold up or «flip» into the next compartment as needed. This creates a playful, tactile addition to the classic: soft in feel, easy to handle, clear in design.

USM Second Cycle

From autumn 2025, teo jakob will be embarking on a new phase: the company will be putting carefully checked, refurbished used USM furniture back into circulation and integrating it into new projects. This furniture comes from facilities where usage requirements have changed and the original purpose has therefore ceased to apply. It can be flexibly recombined: a bookcase can become a green room divider, or a reception desk can become seating. If necessary, teo jakob supplements these configurations with new USM modules – a unique offering aimed at companies, institutions and private individuals.
